Halloween Candy Sorting Activity

Here is a fun math activity that you can try at home this week with all of that Halloween candy.  Sorting by attributes is an important math skill, and candy has lots of attributes:  flavor, color, size, shape, etc.  Have your child look into their candy bag, and just start sorting!  They might start by sorting the candy they like into one pile and candy they don't like into another.  You could then try a new three-way sort, such as piles of chocolate candy, sour candy, and sweet candy.  Encourage kids to create their own ways to sort as well!  Feel free to post how your child sorted their candy.  Pictures would also be a great way to share ideas!  Have fun!

  1. First Hannah sorted her candy into three groups. What she really loves, what she hates and then everything else in between. Needless to say there were only three pieces of candy she doesn't like! She then sorted them by color and eventually we took some candy out of the piles that is hopefully going into the trash!

  2. Adeline and Vivienne sorted their candy this weekend, too. Adeline sorted hers by shape, by candy type (chocolate, gummy, sour, pops, etc.) and then, like Hannah, by likes and dislikes, so she was also able to toss out a few that she did not plan to eat. She then helped Vivienne sort her candy by color. And when they were finished, we picked out a bunch of chocolate candy to use on our day off on Thursday when we plan to make "Halloween candy cookies!"
